IS IT ME OR ARE THE ROADS BECOMING MORE AGRESSIVE ? When sitting next to my pupils and observing other traffic interacting, I have noticed a dramatic shift in driver’s attitudes. As a result the roads are becoming more and more stressful. The roads have become more and more crowded. Everyday new drivers go onto our roads. It’s a fact that people stop driving everyday too. The problem is there are more new drivers going on the roads than are coming off them. Humans being territorial seem to be fighting for space all the time. We all have very busy lives now. In fact our lives have largely become more and more complicated. Naturally we all suffer from stress in varying degrees.
In the photo above there is so much going on that our brains can get an overload of information. This means that our thought process speeds up to try and catch up with everything going on. Of course if we miss something when behind the wheel, that could, in theory, cause serious injury or even death to someone. Notice the pedestrians in the road wandering around, looking at the situation ahead. They are paying no attention whatsoever to the vehicles on the road. As a result, if you are not paying attention also, we have a potentially dangerous combination on our hands.
TRY AND REDUCE THE STRESS LEVELS
IS IT ME OR ARE THE ROADS BECOMING MORE AGRESSIVE be honest, when was the last time you got up behind a learner driver when you were rushing to get somewhere? They are holding you up, going too slow!!! taking too long to emerge from the junction !!! you can feel the heat rising. GET OUT OF THE WAY !!! Next time that happens, try and stop the adrenaline rising and the rage coursing through your veins.
Take a deep breath and think back to your driving lessons. How you felt when some irate driver starts swearing and tooting behind you. Be honest, it didn’t make you feel too great did it and probably made you stall the car through rushing. If i had a £1 for all the times I have sat rolling my eyes because it is sending the driver behind into cardiac arrest because my pupil took longer than 2 seconds to emerge from the junction. Next time that is you, please try and remember your lessons. In general it made your anxiety ten times worse didn’t it?
This is a very typical situation that only makes the frustration worse and makes it potentially dangerous. We don’t make good decisions when we are angry. Neither do we react or co ordinate well. The adrenaline thumping through our veins and heads makes us feel invincible. We are the king/queen of the road and we are correct!! Everyone else is wrong. It’s called “red mist”. Red mist is one of the most intoxicating and speeding ingredients for road rage and potential danger. Some people will actually get out of the car and brawl with each other. pay attention to the road and then they will be a less stressful, safer and quieter place.
I BLAME THE STEERING WHEEL
I blame this thing! The steering wheel. For some reason, many people get behind one of this simple circles and turn into a completely different person. This simple circle make us God. It doesn’t make you anything but the same person you were out of the car. I have witnessed mild mannered people turn into a crazed psychopaths! It has to be to do with territory. We hide behind it. We sometimes think we can’t be seen in a car, but in fact it’s the opposite, you may as well be in a goldfish bowl ! so remember that next time you are picking your nose at the traffic lights.
Clearly the roads have become too much for Her Majesty. She has taken the matter in hand. Of course joking about road rage is a way of dealing with an anti social trend that is unfortunately here to stay. Maybe if more attention was paid to the road and keeping each other safe, we wouldn’t find the school run, learner drivers, buses etc etc such a source of stress and anger. Stay calm and make better decisions on the road.
DRIVE BETTER AND SAVE MONEY
Think of it in a purely mercenary way if you like. Being more attentive to your driving and the roads, we keep our insurance premiums down, Nevermind the poor learner that has just made you a couple of minutes late. Your car will spend less time in the garage and cost you less to run if you stay calm. In fact there is nothing to be gained from road rage at all. When angry or stressed, we tend to drive erratically and that really doesn’t do the car any good at all. As a result it will cost more to run and it will spend more time in the garage than i’m sure you would prefer. Read the next post on Eco safe driving and how to drive better and save money.
